When we see video of Philadelphia Flyers prospect Matvei Michkov zipping around on Russian rinks, he’s wearing uniform number 39.

Thirty-nine? Hmmmm. We know there have been previous No. 39s on the Flyers, but none stand out. (Maybe that’s on the author’s memory, not the players.)

We looked it up.

Nine Flyers have worn No. 39. The first was goalie Robbie Moore in 1979. He was 3-0-1 in five games with a 1.77 goals-against average for the Flyers. Moore had two shutouts in his five games. His NHL career consisted of only one more game, with the Capitals in 1982-83.

Mr. Moore died in January 2022.

It’s probably safe to say that Michkov, if he plays for the Flyers, will have the greatest career among the Philadelphia No. 39s.

39 isn’t a distinctive enough number for a potential superstar. He’s gotta go with something else. Turn it around and go with 93.

While we’re talking numbers, I was hoping they kept Brendan Lemieux and then gave him 66, just to annoy Pittsburgh.

LOL on the Brendan Lemieux thought. That’s great.CB

So I have to ask: What happened to Robbie Moore?

I realize it was only five games but that seems like a decent stat line that would have gotten him more of a look than just five games.

Was he injured?
