Crafters, weavers, and creators of all ages in Lebanon County have an opportunity to showcase their talents in the upcoming Pennsylvania Make It With Wool contest, slated for Oct. 7 at the PA Preferred Banquet Hall in the Farm Show Complex.

The statewide competition, organized by the Pennsylvania Sheep and Wool Growers Association, invites enthusiasts who sew, knit, crochet, or weave with wool and other animal fibers. The contest spans across several age categories: preteens (8-12), juniors (13-16), seniors (17-24), and adults (25 and up). Additionally, a “Made for Others” category allows for any age model and contestant.

Judging will revolve around factors such as the garment’s appropriateness to the contestant’s lifestyle, fit and overall appearance, coordination of fabric/yarn with design, contestant’s presentation, construction quality, creativity, and the promotion of wool’s beauty, comfort, and versatility.

The contest aims to not only promote the versatility of wool fabrics and yarns, but also to foster personal creativity, recognize creative skills, and develop life skills. In a broader scope, it’s an initiative to appreciate diversity and instill a sense of responsibility and sportsmanship among participants.

Contestants must register by Sept. 5. The garments entered must have 60% or more of animal fiber in their composition, excluding interfacings, linings, and trims. Registration requires a $17 state/national fee, in addition to a testing fee per fabric/yarn used.

Prizes, funded by the Pennsylvania Sheep and Wool Growers Association and other donors, await winners in each category. All registrants will receive a piece of wool yardage, with additional prizes also awarded.

The junior and senior winners will qualify for the National Make It With Wool contest, due to take place in Denver, Colorado in January 2024.
